WHY DO THIS? Cost of Opioid Abuse to America is $78 billion dollars a year. 142 die a day of drug overdose; Every 3 weeks same amount as those who died in 911. 20-50% death rate for those who use opioids for 20 years.
More young people die of opioid abuse than car crashes and gun shootings combined. 33,091 in 2015. 20,000 in 2014. 15,000 in 2013; Quadrupled since 2010.
Three out of four heroin addicts started with opioids prescription. This is the largest drug addiction in the history of the USA. The USA has more users of opioid (prescription/other) than any other country.
We hope to tie good resources together and to make government and educational institutions more efficient in this important fight.
Why not do drugs? 1) Illegal; 2) Personally destructive- makes mind/body useless; 3) May be ultimately destructive- dangerous; 4) God disapproves of drunkenness or using a different kind of spirit; 5) Can make you do things that you permanently regret- pregnancy, rape, stealing, break up of family/friends, lose jobs, drop out of education, health issues (AIDS, glomerulosclerosis of kidney);
HOW TO COMBAT?
1) SPIRITUALLY- A) Prayer; B) Fellowship with those who avoid it.
2) SOCIALLY- Speak out against drug abuse; HELP/GET HELP FOR A FRIEND OR FAMILY MEMBER
3) PHYSICALLY- Seek to change Laws; Debate about legality as a way to curb use.
4) MENTALLY- Education- drugs lead to drop out rates, and abuses the mind.
Treatment, Prevention, Rescue, Supply 14,000 treatment centers- but 90% not trained properly- fewer standards.
Good Samaritan laws- stigmatize drugs not stigmatize people; There is tremendous pressure to legalize drugs. But evidence is that normalizing drug use enhances harder (opioid) drug use.
Brains are the repository of our humanity. Defend our brains.
